As RPS has expanded in Ireland, the multidisciplinary facets of the organisation have been integrated for a range of infrastructural and energy projects including engineering, project management, planning, stakeholder liaison and environmental scopes of work on the Dublin Waste to Energy and District Heating Project, the Corrib Gas Pipeline, the Eirgrid North South Interconnector (among others).
The Energy Sector
RPS has over 25 years experience of the energy business in Ireland and Northern Ireland, particularly in the following sectors:
· Gas Infrastructure
· Renewable Energy
· CHP & District Heating
· Energy Auditing
We have advised on national energy policy and economics including the possible conversion to bio energy from agricultural residues, growth in bio-diesel crops and other renewable fuels.
RPS is at the forefront of energy auditing and energy management systems integration in Ireland. From strategic analysis and consultancy for industry through to the delivery of audit and awareness services to small/medium business on behalf of Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), we offer the full range of services required to protect companies from the fluctuating energy market, including managing websites and call centres for SEI and other government bodies.
Our role in the development of I.S. 393: 2025 and ongoing involvement in the development of the equivalent European standard EN 16001 provides us with additional insights, relevant to our clients. We are proud to practice what we preach and have been deemed compliant with I.S. 14001 by NSAI.
RPS advises clients on the key issues that need to be addressed to achieve a more sustainable and resource efficient design – from planning through preliminary and detailed structural and process design to procurement and construction stage. Our expertise in this area is evidenced by our national reputation in the building sector and our role in advising planning authorities, SEI and the Carbon Trust. RPS is managing the governments National Climate Change Awareness Campaign and thus is best placed to understand the challenges of climate change.
RPS has assisted clients in utilising renewable technologies including biomass boiler and CHP systems, anaerobic digestion, energy recovery systems, solar panels, heat pumps and wind turbines. RPS provides support from initial feasibility study to design, specification and installation of the technologies.
We are members of the Biomass and Anaerobic Digestion CHP Panel of Technical Experts for SEI. Our multidisciplinary approach to biomass projects includes planners, agronomists, scientists, and a team of civil, energy and mechanical and electrical engineers. Our technical expertise, combined with our stakeholder and project communication services, means we deliver the integrated planning, technical, environmental and communications services our clients need to bring renewable energy projects through from concept to commissioning.
With the expansion of the marine energy industry and the potential of harnessing the power of the ocean to help meet Ireland’s renewable energy needs, it is important that marine energy developments are carried out in a sustainable manner. RPS has been providing services to the marine energy industry for over 20 years, promoting the sustainable development of marine energy. Our wide range of services to this specialist industry includes:
· Wave and tidal hydraulic modelling, array analysis and useable resource analysis
· Site selection and constraints analysis
· Environmental scoping and impact assessment
· Installation design and construction support
Among the major environmental concerns currently facing Ireland is the challenge to manage our national residual waste streams. In parallel we have the challenges of reducing our national carbon footprint and increasing our security of energy supply. RPS has been at the forefront of energy from waste for the past decade.
We are currently the Clients Representative for a number of waste to energy facilities including the Dublin Waste to Energy Plant in Poolbeg and similar facilities in Belfast for ARC21. The Poolbeg facility, which is currently under construction, will be the catalyst for the first major municipal district heating scheme in Ireland and RPS is over-seeing the roll out of this project with parts of the network already installed.
